LDS will host emergency preparedness expo The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will sponsor an Emergency Preparedness Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7th at the church building, 1276 Erringer Road, Simi Valley. The public is invited and admission is FREE.. Special guest speaker is Joe Kwan. Kwan is Corporate Director of Environmental Remediation for Northrop Grumman Corporation,- Reserve Deputy for Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department - specializing in mountain search and rescue, and a Member of Agoura Hills Disaster Response Team. He now trains with the team at least two days each month and responds to the frequent around the clock callouts on search and rescue operations in the Santa Monica Mountains region of Southern California. He finds that his service in saving lives is both thrilling and rewarding. .He served on the Metro link accident, and most recently on the plane crash on Catalina in February. “The focus of this event is to “Be Prepared”. When you are prepared, you do not fear the outcome of a disaster and are able to function to get through it” says Barry Thomas, co-organizer of the event, “Our goal is to help the community reach those objectives and have a family emergency plan to follow, know the city’s plan of disaster, its resources and to be prepared for any occurrence that may arise.” Classes will be at 11:00am and run for 40 minutes. Topics include: “Where Do I Start”, First Aid, Survival Techniques, Gardening Techniques, Family Emergency Plan, including how to deal with stress and each class will repeat each hour. Demonstrations will be offered on first aid, hands-on canning techniques, water storage, food storage and cooking, emergency amateur radio, 72-hour emergency kit, food gardening, disaster services, and more. Vendor booths participants include: So Cal Gas, So Cal Electric, Costco, SOS, Home Depot, The Ready Project, Lowes, AMR Ambulance Simi Valley Honda Motorcycles, Regional Disaster Mobile Unit, Ventura Co Fire Dept, the Red Cross and many more. Emergency ATV's, Fire trucks, Ambulances and generators will be on display. There will be delicious Food Samples & Recipes Using Home Storage Items. Lunch will be offered as a fundraiser by Boy Scout Troop #3662.
