Full Description:
Baseballers Against Drugs (BAD) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1989 by former ballplayer Jim Dantona and dedicated to focusing the energy of today’s youth into positive thinking and action. BAD has hosted hundreds of free baseball clinics across the country bringing together professional ballplayers and young people. While teaching the fundamental skills of the game, BAD reinforces some fundamental lessons in life with its anti-drug, anti-gang, pro-education message.
Character and self-discipline are touted and self-esteem is encouraged as the children both learn and play. The clinics end with a group-talk, question and answer session, free giveaway items like tee shirts, hats and baseballs, and an autograph session.
Over 250 current and former professional baseball players have lent their time, energy and names to BAD , including Hall of Famers Ernie Banks and Orlando Cepeda as well as 2-time National League Batting Champion Tommy Davis, who now serves as BAD’s Director of Player Relations.
In 1991, the program was awarded the FBI’s prestigious Community Leadership Award.
